How to Start with ManyChat’s Free Plan: A Small, Safe First Workflow

Updated October 7, 2026.

The best first automation answers one real question. ManyChat’s free plan can be a way to explore the product, but old guides may describe allowances and channels that no longer apply. Check the current plan before spending time building a workflow.

Check the limits first

ManyChat changed its pricing model in 2026. Its current Free-plan documentation lists a small active-contact allowance and excludes WhatsApp, SMS, and email. Confirm the exact features shown in your account. A free plan and a temporary paid-plan trial are different offers; check any trial’s renewal conditions separately.

Prepare one useful answer

Choose a low-risk request such as opening hours, a public menu, or a guide link. Write the correct response in plain language. Include the date if the information changes often. Do not start with payment handling, sensitive information, or a complex sales sequence.

Connect the right account

Follow the official onboarding instructions for your chosen supported channel. Use an account you control and have authority to connect. Review requested permissions, confirm the correct page or profile, and avoid sharing account passwords with a contractor to complete setup.

Build a short path

  1. Select a supported trigger for the chosen request.
  2. Add a concise reply that delivers the answer immediately.
  3. Provide a descriptive link if more information is needed.
  4. Add a clear route to a human for questions the flow cannot answer.
  5. Keep any optional preference question separate from delivery.

Interface labels vary, so use the current help pages for exact setup steps. Do not assume a tutorial for another channel uses identical controls.

Test before announcing it

Test from a separate account rather than only the editor preview. Try the intended request, an unexpected reply, missing optional information, and a repeated request. Open all links on mobile. Check that staff receive handoff requests and that the message accurately explains when someone will respond.

Launch narrowly and review

Use the automation for a limited audience first. Keep a record of failed triggers, unanswered questions, and manual interventions. Fix the most common confusion before adding more branches. If you reach a plan limit, evaluate the total paid cost rather than upgrading solely because the tool suggests it.

What success looks like

The customer receives the promised answer, can ask for help, and is not sent unrelated messages. Staff understand how to pause the workflow and update its content. These are better first goals than an unverified promise to increase revenue or save a fixed number of hours.
